At Namulonge, the team visit the the transgenic, CBSV-resistant, cassava trial, where they view extremely high whitefly numbers on the young transgenic, CBSV-resistant cassava.

The black areas on the edges of this cassava leaf are caused by sooty mould growing on the honey-dew (sugary solution) excreted by the high number of whitefly. Sooty mould reduces photosynthesis by the cassava, which leads to reduced yields.
